Environmental Racism

Environmental racism is a form of environmental injustice in which environmental hazards are unequally distributed across different racial and socioeconomic groups. This can happen through deliberate or unintentional policies and practices that result in disproportionate exposure to environmental pollution and other hazards for people of color and low-income communities.

Residential Segregation: Racist housing policies and practices have historically segregated people of color into neighborhoods that are closer to polluting industries and other environmental hazards. For example, in many cities, low-income communities of color are more likely to live near freeways, which are major sources of air pollution.
Industrial Siting: Industries that produce hazardous waste and pollution are often sited in or near communities of color and low-income communities. This is often due to a lack of political power and resources in these communities, which makes it easier for companies to get permits to operate in these areas.
Lack of Access to Green Space: Communities of color and low-income communities often have less access to green space and other natural amenities. This can be due to a number of factors, including poverty, discrimination, and lack of investment in these communities.
Climate Change: Climate change is having a disproportionate impact on communities of color and low-income communities. For example, these communities are more likely to live in areas that are vulnerable to flooding, heat waves, and other extreme weather events.

Recognition: Climate justice recognizes that climate change is a global problem that requires a global solution. It also recognizes that the impacts of climate change are not felt equally by all people, and that marginalized communities are often disproportionately affected.
Participation: Climate justice ensures that marginalized communities have a voice in the decision-making process related to climate change. This includes involving these communities in the development of climate policies and programs, and ensuring that their needs and concerns are taken into account.
Redistribution: Climate justice calls for the redistribution of resources to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change on marginalized communities. This includes providing financial assistance, technical support, and other resources to help these communities adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Transformation: Climate justice requires a transformation of the global economy and the way we produce and consume goods and services. This transformation must be based on the principles of sustainability and equity, and it must prioritize the needs of marginalized communities.
