Secure: Wayland uses a client-server model with strong security features, making it more difficult for attackers to gain access to the system.

The Wayland display server is designed with security in mind. It uses a client-server model, where the Wayland compositor (server) manages the display and input devices, while the Wayland clients manage the content being displayed. This separation of duties makes it more difficult for attackers to gain access to the system, even if they are able to compromise a Wayland client.

In addition, Wayland uses a number of strong security features, such as:

• Mandatory access control (MAC): MAC is a security mechanism that restricts access to resources based on the identity of the user and the sensitivity of the resource.
• Sandboxing: Sandboxing is a security mechanism that isolates applications from each other, so that a compromised application cannot affect other applications or the system itself.
• Secure boot: Secure boot is a security mechanism that verifies the integrity of the boot process, ensuring that only trusted code is loaded.

These security features make Wayland a more secure display server than traditional display servers like X. As a result, Wayland is a good choice for use in security-sensitive environments, such as government and financial institutions.

Conclusion: Wayland is a secure display server that is designed to protect users from attackers. Wayland uses a client-server model and a number of strong security features to make it difficult for attackers to gain access to the system. As a result, Wayland is a good choice for use in security-sensitive environments.

Efficient: Wayland is designed to be more efficient than X, using less memory and CPU resources.

The efficiency of Wayland is one of its key advantages over traditional display servers like X. Wayland is designed to use less memory and CPU resources, which can improve the overall performance of the system. This is especially important for embedded systems and other resource-constrained environments.

• Reduced memory usage: Wayland uses a number of techniques to reduce memory usage, such as caching and sharing resources between clients. This can free up significant amounts of memory, which can improve the performance of other applications and services.
• Reduced CPU usage: Wayland is also designed to use less CPU resources than X. This is achieved by using a number of optimizations, such as reducing the number of system calls and using more efficient algorithms. This can improve the battery life of laptops and other portable devices.
• Improved performance: The reduced memory and CPU usage of Wayland can lead to improved overall performance. This can be noticeable in a number of ways, such as smoother scrolling, faster window resizing, and reduced input latency.

In conclusion, the efficiency of Wayland is a major advantage over traditional display servers like X. Wayland uses less memory and CPU resources, which can improve the overall performance of the system. This makes Wayland a good choice for use in embedded systems and other resource-constrained environments.

Flexible: Wayland is more flexible and extensible than X, making it easier to develop new features and support new hardware.

The flexibility and extensibility of Wayland are major advantages over traditional display servers like X. Wayland is designed with a modular architecture, which makes it easy to add new features and support new hardware.

• Modular architecture: Wayland is designed with a modular architecture, which means that it is composed of a number of smaller, independent modules. This makes it easy to add new features and support new hardware by simply adding or replacing modules.
• Pluggable protocols: Wayland uses a pluggable protocol architecture, which means that new protocols can be added without modifying the core Wayland code. This makes it easy to support new types of hardware and input devices.
• Open source: Wayland is an open source project, which means that anyone can contribute to its development. This has led to a large community of developers who are constantly adding new features and support for new hardware.

The flexibility and extensibility of Wayland make it a good choice for use in a wide variety of applications, from embedded systems to high-end workstations. Wayland is also well-suited for use in cutting-edge research and development, as it is easy to add new features and support new hardware.

Compositor-based: Wayland uses a compositor to manage the display, which allows for more efficient and smoother rendering of graphics.

Wayland uses a compositor to manage the display, which is a key factor in its efficiency and smoothness. A compositor is a software component that is responsible for combining multiple layers of graphics into a single image that is displayed on the screen. In traditional display servers like X, the compositor is part of the server itself. However, in Wayland, the compositor is a separate process that runs on the client side.

This separation of the compositor from the server has several advantages. First, it allows for more efficient rendering of graphics. The compositor can run on a separate thread from the server, which means that it can take advantage of multiple CPU cores. This can lead to smoother scrolling, faster window resizing, and reduced input latency.

Second, the separation of the compositor from the server makes it easier to support new types of hardware. For example, Wayland can support hardware-accelerated compositing, which can further improve the performance of graphics rendering. Additionally, Wayland can support multiple compositors running on different GPUs, which can be useful for multi-head setups.

Overall, the compositor-based architecture of Wayland is a major advantage over traditional display servers like X. Wayland's compositor is more efficient, smoother, and more flexible, which makes it a better choice for use in a wide variety of applications.

Conclusion: Wayland's compositor-based architecture is a key factor in its efficiency and smoothness. The compositor is responsible for combining multiple layers of graphics into a single image that is displayed on the screen. By separating the compositor from the server, Wayland can take advantage of multiple CPU cores and support new types of hardware. This makes Wayland a better choice for use in a wide variety of applications.

DRM-based: Wayland uses the kernel's DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) subsystem to access the graphics hardware, which provides better performance and security.

Wayland's use of DRM is a key factor in its performance and security advantages over traditional display servers like X. DRM is a kernel subsystem that provides a common interface for accessing the graphics hardware. This allows Wayland to take advantage of the latest graphics hardware features, such as hardware-accelerated compositing and protected memory.

Hardware-accelerated compositing can significantly improve the performance of graphics rendering. By offloading the compositing to the GPU, Wayland can free up the CPU for other tasks. This can lead to smoother scrolling, faster window resizing, and reduced input latency.

Protected memory is a security feature that prevents applications from accessing memory that they are not authorized to access. This helps to protect the system from malware and other attacks. Wayland uses DRM's protected memory features to isolate Wayland clients from each other and from the system itself. This makes it more difficult for attackers to gain access to the system, even if they are able to compromise a Wayland client.

In conclusion, Wayland's use of DRM is a key factor in its performance and security advantages. DRM provides Wayland with access to the latest graphics hardware features, such as hardware-accelerated compositing and protected memory. This makes Wayland a more efficient, smoother, and more secure display server than traditional display servers like X.

Touch-friendly: Wayland has built-in support for touchscreens, making it ideal for use on laptops, tablets, and other touch-enabled devices.

Wayland's built-in support for touchscreens is a key advantage over traditional display servers like X. X does not have built-in support for touchscreens, which means that touchscreen support must be added by third-party drivers. This can lead to a number of problems, such as poor performance, lack of features, and security vulnerabilities.

Wayland, on the other hand, has built-in support for touchscreens from the ground up. This means that Wayland can provide a more consistent and reliable touchscreen experience across different devices. Wayland also supports a number of advanced touchscreen features, such as multi-touch gestures and pressure-sensitive input.

As a result, Wayland is the best choice for use on touch-enabled devices. Wayland provides a more consistent, reliable, and feature-rich touchscreen experience than X. This is a critical advantage for devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones, which are increasingly being used for touch-based interaction.

Conclusion: Wayland's built-in support for touchscreens is a major advantage over traditional display servers like X. Wayland provides a more consistent, reliable, and feature-rich touchscreen experience across different devices. As a result, Wayland is the best choice for use on touch-enabled devices.

Open source: Wayland is an open source project, which means that it is free to use and modify.
